COSMO: What I Learned In July 2010

Well here's one for the books... Cosmo writers recently attended the International Society of Cosmetogynecology's Global Symposium on Cosmetic Vaginal Surgery. Boy was that a mouthful. Yeah, there's actually a global symposium on cosmetic vaginal procedures. The primarily male loaded conference is all about the business of making your lady bits prettier, you know because vaginas are so ugly... right? Supposedly the procedures range from color augmentation to labia tightening to labia minora removal. (Because that looks natural) It all began about 14 years ago when an unnamed former Dr. 90210 MD popularized a vaginal tightening surgery that was supposed to help with incontinence, but you know, why help women with actual dysfunctions when you can deaden her sex nerves and make her look more like airbrushed porn stars?! MDs are saying women are coming into their offices with porn clippings, "Just open up a Playboy and you'll notice that they're all perfectly neat and symmetrical, with no visible labia minor. 'Some art directors will airbrush models' genitalia to clean them up." This new trend in "vaginal perfection" is just one more thing that women are adding to the laundry list of fix-it projects and it's starting to bleed onto the younger generations, "I see girls as young as 15 coming in now," Dr. Matlock was quoted as saying. The disproportionate number of male OBs at the event tried to justify their actions by saying that a woman should have the right to decide what she wants her vagina to look like and that if she's not happy with it then she should have access to change it, as any other part of her body. At least their hearts are in the right place, it's not like one MD was quoted to say, "Two incisions, 15 minutes, and I cash the check. Those are my dirty, golden fingers." No, at least these men are doing this selfless act from the bottom of their vagina loving hearts. Could it be possible that maybe women are now having problems with their vaginas because of porn, (Side note: "according to Neilson, 37% of the US visitors to adult sites are female") or because as one doctor remarked, "Husbands love the peekaboo look" referring the absence of labia minora. But seriously, let's call a spade a spade and just refer to vaginal cosmetic surgery as what is it, genital mutilation. Similar to how parents needlessly (and without religious zeal) circumcise their baby boys for aesthetic purposes, any unnecessary augmentation of the genitals that can result in loss of sexual sensation is mutilation. This "Cosmetogynecology" is just a fancy, expensive, white-collar version of what third world societies are doing to "purify" their young girls. In addition to permanently and unnaturally augmenting a woman's genitalia, these MDs usually aren't versed enough to perform the surgery correctly. Some surgeons are plastics, who don't have a full understanding of complicated anatomy and some are OB/GYNs, who don't have a strong background in cosmetic surgery. In many cases the surgeries have potential to "cause nerve damage, pain, necrosis (death of tissue), loss of sexual arousal and an inability to experience pleasure." Ladies, before you think about sprucing up your lady bedrock please ask yourself how many men would consider uncurving their members, go through adult circumcision or make their balls more symmetrical for aesthetics with the possibility of loosing all sexual feeling. Ask yourself if you're really willing to give up the ability to orgasm for looks, if your answer is yes, you probably already gave up your nipple sensation for breast implants. And to all you ladies out there, know that MissBleecker does not judge you for your personal choices but also thinks you should not judge yourself for the body that you were given. Lovey, dovey, cheesy, feely. Love your body, blah, blah, blah...
