KATY PERRY: The Ironic Feminist

Chapter 6: Hot N Cold: The Myth Of The Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Hot N Cold is one of my personal favorites. It's a classic example of a common male phobia, what I like to refer to as, The Myth of the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." In the video, Katy is shown being left at the alter by her inappropriately haired groom. Being the sensible lady she is, she chases him, rips off her dress, steals a little kid's bike and then waits at his car, covered in mascara tears, baseball bat in tow and guess what... she's got friends. An angry dancing posse of disheveled, crying brides (yeah, that happens.) When groomy runs away from The Bridezilla Club he runs into a cute, hip-hop version of his Katy and has to choose between the cute friendly version and the mascara streaked, terrible dancer version of his girl. And then he realizes... it was all a dream. Dun dun dun! He says "I do" and they live happily ever after. The end. So what does this video have to do with the Myth of the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? Well, it is a theory of mine, because I have known many men with crazy exes, I have also known many women to do crazy things, who actually aren't crazy. But let's face it ladies, men can sometimes drive us to do crazy things, and men, don't you think all women are crazy? I thought so. Anyway... Katy is clearly exhibiting signs of stereotypical crazy ex-girlfriend behavior: running after a man, getting friends as backup, wrecking his car, crying, crazy voicemails... So is she feeding into the idea of a crazy girlfriend or is she mocking it?
You change your mind like a girl changes clothes Yeah, you change your mind like a girl I would know And you always think, always speak cryptically I should know that you're no good for me Someone call the doctor Got a case of a love disorder Stuck on a roller coaster Can't get off this ride
These lyrics are clearly about a woman who's being driven crazy by her boyfriend's unpredictable behavior. Katy takes it to another level by mocking the image men's nightmares have created about the repercussions of messing with a crazy bitch. I warn you not to do it... but do continue to the next chapter! Or else!

  1. This is AWESOME. I’ve always thought of Katy Perry as not-your-typical-popstar, even if her songs are pop sound to the nth level. It’s not just because she reminds me of Zooey Deschanel. Just by looking at her, and how she does this sexy-sultry-sex siren image with so much enjoyment, I never even thought for a moment she’s one of those dumb popstars. And yeah, her lyrics speak volumes even with the bubblegummy dancey-tuney melodies.
