KATY PERRY: The Ironic Feminist

Introduction: The Ironic Feminist
Katy sure looks like 'one of the boys' in her sunhat chilling on her pink lounge chair!
Katy Perry, she's been on the scene for a couple years now and it seems that the wilder and more outrageous she gets the more popular she gets. Her latest single, California Gurls, off her highly anticipated new album, Teenage Dream, was the #1 song in America and has been getting almost as much YouTube play as Charlie Bit My Finger. But what is it about Katy Perry that fascinates and captivates America so? Is it her vargas/80s/girly/hipster mish-mosh of dress? Is it her contralto vocal range? There is definitely something to be said about why Katy Perry is so popular and there might also be something said about what the fuck exactly she's doing with her career. This is where my next question comes in: Is Katy Perry an ironic feminist, who is making a statement about women in popular music by singing in an overly sexualized and fantasized way... or is she just plain dumb? Next chapter please!

  1. This is AWESOME. I’ve always thought of Katy Perry as not-your-typical-popstar, even if her songs are pop sound to the nth level. It’s not just because she reminds me of Zooey Deschanel. Just by looking at her, and how she does this sexy-sultry-sex siren image with so much enjoyment, I never even thought for a moment she’s one of those dumb popstars. And yeah, her lyrics speak volumes even with the bubblegummy dancey-tuney melodies.
