CHRISTINA AGUILERA’S “NOT MYSELF TONIGHT”: A Lesson In Radical Feminism

Introduction: Aguilera's Feminist Manifesto Aguilera's career has been turbulent and varying since her introduction into popular culture. Aguilera purposely tries to shock us with the images seen in her video, not because she wants to sell records, this will be a byproduct, but because she is satirizing female sexuality. She points a finger at popular culture and how we view and portray the female. The images said to "copy" other female artists are not done as an homage or to steal their popularity, but rather to mock and criticize them. The images sampled by the Aguilera video represent the duality of each artist. Not only does Aguilera choose 2 videos or images from each artist that contradict themselves, but the videos' contradicting messages speak to the theme of the Aguilera video and lyrics; that the traditional madonna/whore dichotomy is still being applied to women. The 2 contradictory songs that Aguilera chooses to feature, from each artist, also represent a type of reinvention by the artists. From being formerly considered more pure and innocent to someone more sexual and fantastical, supposedly closest to their true persona. To understand the statement Aguilera is trying to make with her video, we need to understand some history. The following chapters focus on her early career and run through all of the imagery references in the Not Myself Tonight Video. We will see how from her self titled years to Stripped to Back to Basics and now with Bionic, Aguilera is constantly changing the game, but keeping her message the same. Women can be sexual, powerful, beautiful and smart without sacrificing anything.
